Herkimer Diamond
Herkimer Diamonds look like tiny, naturally cut gems, but their name is delightfully misleading: they are not diamonds at all. They are exceptionally clear, double-terminated quartz crystals named after Herkimer County in New York, where they were found in dolostone rock.
What is a Herkimer Diamond?
A true Herkimer Diamond is quartz, or silicon dioxide (SiO2), with naturally formed points at both ends. This shape is called double termination. Unlike a conventional gemstone, the crystal does not need to be faceted by a lapidary to create its distinctive geometry.
Herkimer quartz measures 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. It can be water-clear or contain clouds, tiny fractures, rainbows and dark mineral inclusions. Those internal landscapes are part of what makes each crystal individual.
Why is it called a diamond?
The word “diamond” refers to its bright lustre and naturally faceted appearance, not its mineral composition. Diamond is carbon and measures 10 on the Mohs scale; Herkimer Diamond is quartz and is softer. The name properly belongs to crystals from the Herkimer County area, although similar double-terminated quartz from other locations is sometimes sold under the same trade name.
Herkimer Diamond meaning and traditional benefits
In modern crystal traditions, Herkimer Diamond is associated with clarity, focus, attunement and new beginnings. Some people wear it as a personal reminder to set an intention, communicate clearly or move through change with purpose.
These “benefits” are symbolic and spiritual beliefs, not scientifically proven medical effects. A crystal can carry meaning without being presented as a treatment: the story, material and person wearing it are what make a piece feel powerful.
Why I use Herkimer quartz in jewellery
As a jeweller, I love that every Herkimer crystal already has its own architecture. Instead of cutting it into a standard shape, I create the setting around the natural points, inclusions and proportions of the stone. Clear quartz looks luminous against sterling silver, while darker inclusions give a piece a more mysterious character.
Each Gin Fon Ask piece is handmade in my Vilnius studio using recycled sterling silver. Small crystals suit light earrings; larger or more unusual specimens become one-of-a-kind rings and talismans.
How to care for Herkimer Diamond jewellery
- Wash gently with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush.
- Avoid bleach, strong chemicals, abrasive cleaners and sudden temperature changes.
- Store each piece separately so harder gemstones cannot scratch the quartz.
- Remove rings before heavy work or activities that may strike the crystal points.
