Clear quartz is one of the most recognisable stones in jewellery: colourless, glass-like and often filled with veils, internal fractures or tiny inclusions that make every crystal look different. As a jeweller, I am drawn to quartz precisely because it is rarely perfectly clear. The marks formed inside the stone become part of the design rather than something to hide.

What is crystal quartz?

Crystal quartz, also called clear quartz or rock crystal, is a naturally occurring form of silicon dioxide (SiO2). It measures 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it durable enough for jewellery, although sharp knocks can still chip pointed or heavily included crystals.

Quartz can be transparent, milky or crossed by fine internal lines. Faden quartz has a thread-like inclusion running through it, while terminated crystals grow with naturally formed points. I often choose these irregular specimens because no two finished pieces can be identical.

Crystal quartz meaning and symbolism

Across different traditions, clear quartz has been associated with clarity, focus and amplification. It is sometimes called a “master crystal” in modern crystal folklore. These meanings are cultural and spiritual beliefs rather than medical facts, but they can still make a piece of jewellery feel personal.

For me, the appeal is simpler: quartz catches light without needing a conventional gemstone cut. A raw or lightly polished crystal keeps its original character and turns the jewellery into a small object you can study from every angle.

How crystal quartz is used in jewellery

Quartz works beautifully in rings, earrings and pendants. Clear stones pair naturally with sterling silver, while inclusions create contrast against darker or textured metal. Larger points make strong one-of-a-kind talismans; smaller specimens can be worn as everyday jewellery.

Because the stones vary in shape, I build many settings individually in my Vilnius studio. The silver is shaped around the crystal rather than forcing the crystal into a standard setting.

How to care for crystal quartz jewellery

• Clean it with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush.
• Avoid household chemicals, perfume and abrasive cleaners.
• Store it separately from harder gemstones that may scratch it.
• Remove rings before heavy work, exercise or activities where the stone may be struck.

Quartz is durable, but naturally pointed and included stones still deserve gentle handling.
